Types of Blepharitis: Anterior vs. Posterior Blepharitis

At Louie Eyecare Centre, we understand the discomfort and inconvenience eyelid inflammation, or blepharitis, can cause our patients. To help you better understand this condition, we’re delving into its two primary types: anterior and posterior blepharitis.

Anterior Blepharitis: Symptoms and Management

Anterior Blepharitis primarily affects the outside front of the eyelids, where the eyelashes attach. Bacteria, parasites like demodex, or allergies cause it. Patients with anterior blepharitis usually experience symptoms like redness, swelling, and crustiness around the eyelashes. These symptoms often resemble dandruff and, in some cases, are linked to a type of dandruff of the scalp and eyebrows. Our centre emphasizes the importance of good eyelid hygiene in managing anterior blepharitis, which can include regular cleaning routines with specific eyelid-formulated cleansers and, in some cases, prescribed antibiotic treatments.

Posterior Blepharitis: Causes and Treatment

Posterior Blepharitis affects the inner part of the eyelid that comes in contact with the eye and is primarily related to issues with the oil glands in the eyelid, known as meibomian glands. This form of blepharitis is often associated with a skin condition called rosacea and other skin disorders. Patients may experience symptoms like a gritty or burning sensation in the eyes, excessive tearing, and dryness. Managing posterior blepharitis typically involves a combination of warm compresses, eyelid massages to stimulate oil flow, and potentially omega-3 fatty acid supplements to improve gland function.
